<p>Brethren and sisters: It is truly a joy to meet with you. I want to take this opportunity to thank you and to tell you how grateful I am for your thoughtful solicitations and your faith and prayers. God bless every one of you for your integrity and devotion to the work of the Lord! It is an honor and a continual joy to be associated with you in the Church of Jesus Christ.</p>
<p>We are grateful for the blessing of the Lord to his Church in all the world, for the assurance of his divine guidance and inspiration. With deep gratitude we acknowledge in your presence the Lord&#8217;s nearness and his goodness, and in that spirit of prayerful appreciation, proclaim that our souls respond in harmony with the glorious vision given to the Prophet Joseph Smith.</p>
<p>&#8220;Hear, O ye heavens, and give ear, O earth, and rejoice ye inhabitants thereof, for the Lord is God, and beside him there is no Savior.</p>
<p>&#8220;Great is his wisdom, marvelous are his ways, and the extent of his doings none can find out. . . .</p>
<p>&#8220;For thus saith the Lord-I, the Lord, am merciful and gracious unto those who fear me, and delight to honor those who serve me in righteousness and truth unto the end.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/76/1-2%2C5#1" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 76:1&ndash;2, 5" target="_dc761-2%2C5">D&amp;C 76:1&ndash;2, 5</a>.)</p>
<p>I deeply sense my inadequacy in trying to express in words the message I have in my heart this morning. I earnestly pray for your help and assistance, and especially for the inspiration of the Lord, that we may sense his presence during this opening session and all the sessions of this conference. I am delighted to see these doorways crowded by interested listeners. It is a sight we all should take to heart, a manifestation of those who love the Lord and keep his commandments.</p>
<h3>Two Great Forces</h3>
<p>I cannot get my thoughts off the fact that there are two great forces in the world more potent than ever before, each force more determined to achieve success, more active in planning, and on the one side, scheming, than ever before.</p>
<h3>Satan Sought Power</h3>
<p>These two great forces are hate and love. Hate had its origin in our preexistent state. There is a significant reference in the Apocalypse to &#8220;a war in heaven.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/rev/12/4#4" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Rev. 12:4" target="_rev124">Rev. 12:4</a>.) It is not only significant, but seemingly contradictory, for we think of heaven as a celestial abode of bliss, an impossible condition where war and contention could exist. The passage is significant because it implies a freedom of choice and of action in the spirit world. In the Pearl of Great Price we are given this account: &#8220;Wherefore, because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man, which I the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten, I caused that he should be cast down;</p>
<p>&#8220;And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/4/3-4#3" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 4:3&ndash;4" target="_moses43-4">Moses 4:3&ndash;4</a>. Italics added.)</p>
<p>Two things you will note in that passage: one, that Satan was determined to destroy the free agency of man. Free agency is a gift of God. It is part of his divinity. The second point is that he desired to supplant God. I quote, &#8220;Give me thy glory.&#8221; (See Ibid., 4:1.)</p>
<p>The world does not comprehend the significance of that divine gift to the individual. It is as inherent as intelligence which, we are told, has never been nor can be created.</p>
<p>In the spirit of hate, as is manifest today in the world, the very existence of God is denied, the free agency of man is taken from him, and the power of the state supplanted. I do not know that there was ever a time in the history of mankind when the Evil One seemed so determined to take from man his freedom.</p>
<h3>Free Agency Fundamental</h3>
<p>A fundamental principle of the gospel is free agency, and references in the scriptures show that this principle is (l) essential to man&#8217;s salvation; and (2) may become a measuring rod by which the actions of men, of organizations, of nations may be judged.</p>
<p>&#8220;Therefore,&#8221; we are told in the scripture, &#8220;cheer up your hearts, and remember that ye are free to act for yourselves-to choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal life.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_ne/10/23#23" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 2 Nephi 10:23" target="_2_ne1023">2 Nephi 10:23</a>.)</p>
<p>&#8220;For the earth is full, and there is enough and to spare; yea, I prepared all things, and have given unto the children of men to be agents unto themselves.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/104/17#17" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 104:17" target="_dc10417">D&amp;C 104:17</a>.)</p>
<p>&#8220;Therefore, it is not right that any man should be in bondage one to another.</p>
<p>&#8220;And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.&#8221; (Ibid., 101:79-80.)</p>
<p>&#8220;My independence is sacred to me,&#8221; said Brigham Young, &#8220;it is a portion of that same Deity that rules in the heavens. There is not a being upon the face of the earth who is made in the image of God, who stands erect and is organized as God is, that would be deprived of the free exercise of his agency so far as he does not infringe upon other&#8217;s rights, save by good advice and a good example.&#8221; (Discourses of Brigham Young, 1943 ed., p. 62.)</p>
<p>The history of the world with all its contention and strife is largely an account of man&#8217;s effort to free himself from bondage and usurpation.</p>
<p>Man&#8217;s free agency is an eternal principle of progress, and any form of government that curtails or inhibits its free exercise is wrong. Satan&#8217;s plan in the beginning was one of coercion, and it was rejected because he sought to destroy the agency of man which God had given him.</p>
<h3>God-Given, eternal principle of progress</h3>
<p>When man uses this God-given right to encroach upon the rights of another, he commits a wrong. Liberty becomes license, and the man, a transgressor. It is the function of the state to curtail the violator and to protect the individual.</p>
<p>Next to the bestowal of life itself, the right to direct our lives is God&#8217;s greatest gift to man. Freedom of choice is more to be treasured than any possession earth can give. It is inherent in the spirit of man. It is a divine gift to every normal being. Whether born in abject poverty or shackled at birth by inherited riches, everyone has the most precious of all life&#8217;s endowments-the gift of free agency, man&#8217;s inherited and inalienable right. It is the impelling source of the soul&#8217;s progress. It is the purpose of the Lord that man becomes like him. In order for man to achieve this, it was necessary for the Creator first to make him free. To man is given a special endowment not bestowed upon any other living thing. God gave to him the power of choice. Only to the human being did the Creator say: &#8220;. . . thou mayest choose for thyself for it is given unto thee; . . .&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/3/17#17" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 3:17" target="_moses317">Moses 3:17</a>.) Without this divine power to choose, humanity cannot progress.</p>
<h3>Free agency-responsibility</h3>
<p>With free agency, however, there comes responsibility. If man is to be rewarded for righteousness and punished for evil, then common justice demands that he be given the power of independent action. A knowledge of good and evil is essential to man&#8217;s progress on earth. If he were coerced to do right at all times or helplessly enticed to commit sin, he would merit neither a blessing for the first nor punishment for the second. Man&#8217;s responsibility is correspondingly operative with his free agency. Actions in harmony with divine law and the laws of nature will bring happiness, and those in opposition to divine truth, misery. Man is responsible not only for every deed, but also for every idle word and thought.</p>
<p>Freedom of the will and the responsibility associated with it are fundamental aspects of Jesus&#8217; teachings. Throughout his ministry he emphasized the worth of the individual and exemplified what is now expressed in modern revelation as &#8220;his work and his glory.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/1/39#39" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 1:39" target="_moses139">Moses 1:39</a>.) Only through the divine gift of soul freedom is such progress possible.</p>
<h3>Individual Freedom Threatened</h3>
<p>Force rules in the world today. Individual freedom is threatened by international rivalries and false political ideals. Unwise legislation, too often prompted by political expediency, if enacted, will seductively undermine man&#8217;s right of free agency, rob him of his rightful liberties, and make him but a cog in the crushing wheel of regimentation.</p>
<p>Though it is not a pleasing thought, we must realize that over half the world is under the influence of hate as manifest by the Chinese leader, manifest by the communist group in Russia, and manifest right next door to us in Cuba. Accompanying the spirit of hate is the denial of the existence of God. Satan was cast down because he tried to replace the Creator. But his power is still manifest. He is active and is prompting at this moment the denial of God&#8217;s existence, of the existence of his Beloved Son, and denying the efficacy of the gospel of Jesus Christ.</p>
<p>The Associated Press sometime ago related some instances that are taking place in China to change men&#8217;s minds in a nation of over six hundred million people, whose hearts, whose minds have been changed as far as they could be changed by the spirit of hate. Forty-five or fifty years ago there was a spirit of tolerance and respect in China for Americans. In a school at Peking which was fostered by Americans, I personally saw some of the most active young men in junior high school that I have ever seen in my life. I have never seen more courtesy in any country in the world. Today all that is changed. The Associated Press made this report:</p>
<h3>Power Based on Hate</h3>
<p>&#8220;A decade ago Mao Tze-Tung&#8217;s newly-created People&#8217;s Republic of China threw its Red Shadow across an alarmed Asia. Today, the lengthening Shadow has crept half way across the earth to the Americas. No one can say with certainty where it will stop&#8230;. In his sixty-sixth year this round-faced lofty-browed son of peasants has been raised by his communist followers to the eminence of a demi-god. His words actions, and even his thoughts, are holy writ for 630 million people. He is one of the most powerful men on earth, and much of his power is based on the most debilitating of human emotions-hate. Hatred for the United States, hatred for rich landlords, for counter-revolutionaries, for Chiang Kai-Shek, hatred for anyone who fails to conform. `Hatred,&#8217; said a traveler recently returned from Mao&#8217;s China, `has become an institution, particularly hatred for the United States. It is horrible to see this vast human machinery run by only one fuel-hatred! If it used love instead it could become the most powerful naion on earth&#8217; &#8221; (Associated Press, appearing in the Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, December 11, 1960.)</p>
<h3>A Modern Assault Upon God</h3>
<p>In the spirit of hate these men would supplant God. In the spirit of hate they deny his existence. They deny the existence of his Only Begotten Son. They would destroy the free agency of man. Here, in the spirit of love, we praise his name and teach his precepts.</p>
<h3>Jesus, the Man of Love and Goodwill</h3>
<p>Let us for a moment or two consider Jesus, the man of love. He revered and worshiped God, and is himself revered and worshiped by all Christian nations and classes of individuals. &#8220;Whatever may be the surprises of the future,&#8221; wrote Renan, &#8220;Jesus will never be surpassed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Millions of people, speaking different languages and cherishing various ideals, worship him and revere him today. We revere him because his wisdom and spirituality comprehend and exceed that of all others. He it is who said, &#8220;I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/john/8/12#12" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: John 8:12" target="_john812">John 8:12</a>.) He also said to his disciples, &#8220;. . . I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.&#8221; (Ibid., 13:15.)</p>
<p>First, in the spirit of love, let us consider Jesus&#8217; attitude toward God. That is the great question before the world today. The communists deny him, Mao ridicules him, and they have poisoned untold millions of minds against Christ</p>
<p>What about Jesus as manifest in the flesh? In announcing his birth the heavenly hosts sang, &#8220;Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/luke/2/14#14" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Luke 2:14" target="_luke214">Luke 2:14</a>.) In that message there is godliness, peace, and brotherly kindness.</p>
<p>Godliness, Jesus exemplified every hour of his earthly existence. On the banks of the Jordan at the beginning of his ministry, we hear him say to John: &#8220;Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/matt/3/15#15" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Matt. 3:15" target="_matt315">Matt. 3:15</a>.)</p>
<p>On the Mount of Temptation, which rises just above the Jordan where Jesus was baptized, he was tempted by that Tempter who tried to supplant God; tempted with all the things of earth and the power thereof. We hear him say in sublime majesty, &#8220;Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.&#8221; (Ibid. 4:10.)</p>
<p>When he taught the disciples to pray, he included in the first petition godliness-&#8221;Hallowed be thy name.&#8221; (Ibid., 6:9.)</p>
<p>Addressing the Twelve at the Last Supper, he said, &#8220;This is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/john/17/3#3" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: John 17:3" target="_john173">John 17:3</a>.)</p>
<p>That is the spirit of love, the spirit of faith in God the Creator of heaven and earth through his Beloved Son. God is worshiped by his Only Begotten Son.</p>
<h3>&#8220;Peace be unto you&#8221;</h3>
<p>What about the condition of peace?</p>
<p>Peace has been defined as the happy, natural state of man, the &#8220;first of human blessings.&#8221; Without it there can be no happiness, and &#8220;Happiness,&#8221; said the Prophet Joseph Smith, &#8220;is the object and design of our existence, and will be the end thereof, if we pursue the path that leads to it; . . . (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 255.)</p>
<p>Jesus said, &#8220;. . . In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/john/16/33#33" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: John 16:33" target="_john1633">John 16:33</a>.)</p>
<p>On the same occasion, he said, &#8220;Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth give I unto you. . . .&#8221; (Ibid., 14:27.) All through his life peace was on his lips and in his heart, and when he came forth from the tomb and appeared unto his disciples, his first greeting was, &#8220;Peace be unto you. . . .&#8221; (Ibid., 20:21.)</p>
<p>Peace as taught by the Savior is exemption from individual troubles, from family broils, from national riots and difficulties. Such peace refers to the person just as much as it does to communities. That man is not at peace who is untrue to the whisperings of Christ-the promptings of his conscience. He cannot be at peace when he is untrue to his better self, when he transgresses the law of righteousness, either in dealing with himself by indulging in passions or appetites, in yielding to the temptations of the flesh, or whether he is untrue to trust in transgressing the law.</p>
<p>Peace does not come to the transgressor of law, Peace comes by obedience to law, and it is that message which Jesus would have us establish among men-peace to the individual that he may be at peace with his God; perfect harmony existing between his Creator and himself, perfect harmony existing between himself and law, the righteous laws to which he is subject and from which he never can escape peace in the home, families living at peace with each other and with their neighbors.</p>
<p>There are some who would say his teachings are not applicable today.</p>
<h3>The Testimony of Joseph Smith</h3>
<p>A few years ago there was a boy among boys who saw him, who heard him and received his teachings. Joseph Smith saw the Redeemer, and he has given that testimony to the world; he has recorded his message, and emphasized again the eternal truth that Christ&#8217;s teachings are divine and as applicable to the civilized world today as to the people among whom Jesus walked and talked.</p>
<h3>The Power of Thinking</h3>
<p>Fundamental in all Christ&#8217;s teachings was the crime of wrong thinking. He condemned avarice, enmity, hate, jealousy as vehemently as he did the results that avarice, enmity, and hate produce. Modern psychology, as all students know, proves the virtue of such teachings regarding the injury that follows the harboring of hate. He who harbors hatred and bitterness injures himself far more than the one towards whom he manifests these evil propensities.</p>
<p>Equally applicable to present conditions are his teachings regarding the value and sacredness of human life, the virtue of forgiveness, the necessity of fair dealings, the crime of hypocrisy, the sin of covetousness, the saving power of love, the immortality of man.</p>
<h3>Attacks upon Peace and Righteousness</h3>
<p>If men ever reject the fact that Christ is our Lord and Savior and fill their souls with hatred as that nation of over six hundred million people are compelled to do, and not only deny Christ, but deny that his mission is to redeem man from the sordid life of selfish indulgence and sin, and lift him into a realm shown only by him of self-sacrifice, generosity, beauty, and love; if the majority of nations fail to recognize Christ as the only &#8220;name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/acts/4/12#12" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Acts 4:12" target="_acts412">Acts 4:12</a>); if doubting men reject the possibility of obtaining that spiritual assurance of Christ&#8217;s divinity disclosed by Thomas when he reverently exclaimed: &#8220;My Lord and my God&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/john/20/28#28" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: John 20:28" target="_john2028">John 20:28</a>); if the acts of men generally be in accordance with such rejection rather than in accordance with their acceptance of him as the Divine One, then this world will continue to be torn by contention, made miserable by hideous warfare, and ignominiously wrecked on the shoals of materialism, selfish indulgence, and disbelief nd hatred.</p>
<h3>Rejecting Him will bring the bondage of the Jungle</h3>
<p>Without Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucified Christ, the Risen Lord, the traits of the jungle will hold the human family in bondage.</p>
<p>In conclusion, the obligation and duty rests upon the Church of Jesus Christ to proclaim the mighty truth that the Man of Galilee, the resurrected Christ, is truly the Way, the Truth, and the Life-that he is in very deed the Savior of all mankind.</p>
<p>Pernicious efforts and sinister schemes are cunningly and stealthily being fostered to deprive man of his individual freedom and have him revert to the life of the jungle. With faith in the revealed word of God, let all true believers in individual freedom cherish the spiritual ideals of the Christ, and ever strive to make real the dream that all men shall be free, and that some day many nations will unite, not for war, but for peace and the establishing of the kingdom of God on earth. That this condition may soon be possible and real and that men may strive to bring it about, I humbly pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. </p>

<p>“And there was war in heaven: Michael  and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and  his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more  in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent,  called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was  cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him  (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/rev/12/7-9#7" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Revelation 12:7&ndash;9" target="_rev127-9">Revelation 12:7&ndash;9</a>).” (<a href="http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&amp;locale=0&amp;sourceId=16a54bb52a73d110VgnVCM100000176f620a____&amp;hideNav=1" target="_blank">James  J. <p>As Latter-day Saints we understand some  of the details behind this war&#8230;</p>
<p>“&#8230;That Satan&#8230; is the same which  was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying — Behold,  here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind,  that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore  give me thine honor. But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my  Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me — Father, thy  will be done, and the glory be thine forever. Wherefore, because that  Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man,  which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give  unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten, I caused  that he should be cast down;” (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/4/1-3#1" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 4: 1&ndash;3" target="_moses41-3">Moses 4: 1&ndash;3</a>)</p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffff96;">How was it that Lucifer&#8217;s argument was  so compelling and appealing that a third of the hosts of heaven followed Lucifer</span> (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/rev/12/4#4" target="_blank">1</a>)  (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/29/36#36" target="_blank">2</a>), knowing that they would be cast out of  Father&#8217;s presence.</p>
<p>I believe the answer is found in  examining how Satan, appearing as an angel of light, is also  deceiving many today. Satan&#8217;s argument in the war in heaven must have  seemed so good, so true and right that his followers honestly  believed it was the better way &#8211; after all, these were spirits who  dwelt in the presence of God, the Father; they are his children.</p>
<p>How is Satan deceiving people today,  appearing as an angel of light?</p>

<p>President  Ezra Taft Benson once said:</p>
<p>“Every  person on the earth today chose the right side during the war in  heaven.  Be on the right side now.” (Assembly Hall, Temple Square,  Feb. 1966)</p>
<p>The  doctrine of a war in Heaven is not exclusive to the Church of Jesus  Christ of Latter-day Saints.</p>
<p>In  <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/rev/12/7-9#7" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Revelation 12:7&ndash;9" target="_rev127-9">Revelation 12:7&ndash;9</a>, we read:</p>
<p>And  there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the  dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not;  neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great  dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan,  which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and  his angels were cast out with him.</p>
<p>Though  all Bible believing religions recognize a war in Heaven, the  knowledge of what the war was all about is exclusive to the Church of  Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  We read in <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/4/3#3" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 4:3" target="_moses43">Moses 4:3</a>,</p>
<p>Wherefore,  because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the  agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I  should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only  Begotten, I caused that he should be cast down<strong>;</strong></p>
<p>Above,  we read the words of Ezra Taft Benson explaining the need to be on  the right side of that war now.  That war is not over.<strong> </strong>President  David O McKay said<strong>: </strong></p>
<p>There are “two contending Forces.  Those forces are known and have been designated by different terms  throughout the ages. “In the beginning” they were known as Satan  on the one hand, and Christ on the other… In these days, they are  called “domination by the state,” on one hand, “personal  liberty,” on the other.”</p>
<p>From  the words of the Prophets we see that battle isn’t over, and where  the battle lines are drawn today.  We see that what Christ has fought  for, continues to fight for and asks us to fight for is freedom of  the individual, “personal liberty”.</p>
<p>In fact, John  Taylor said<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>, </strong></span></p>
<p>“Besides the  preaching of the Gospel, we have another mission, namely, the  perpetuation of the free agency of man and the maintenance of  liberty, freedom, and the rights of man.&#8221;<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong> </strong></span>–General  Conference April 1882</p>
<p>To magnify this  point, the February 2006 Ensign magazine, had an article written by  Elder Shirley D Christensen of the Seventy, entitled, “I, the Lord  God, Make You Free.”  In it he said;</p>
<p><strong>“</strong><span lang="en-US">Are  we doing all that we should to preserve freedom wherever we live?   &#8230;The Lord has placed upon His children the responsibility of  preserving their precious freedoms.”</span><strong> </strong></p>
<p>The Lord made us  free, and He instituted governments to protect us in our freedoms   (See <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/134" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 134" target="_dc134">D&amp;C 134</a>).  Is there a specific governmental structure that  He has created to fulfill his purposes in this regards?</p>
<p>The Lord tells us  in <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/101/77-80#77" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 101:77&ndash;80" target="_dc10177-80">D&amp;C 101:77&ndash;80</a></p>
<p>The laws and  constitution of the people, which I have suffered to be established,  …</p>
<p>That every man <span style="text-decoration: underline;">may act</span> in  doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according <span style="text-decoration: underline;">to the  moral agency</span> which I have given unto him<span style="text-decoration: underline;">, that every man may  be accountable for his own sins</span> in the day of judgment&#8230;And <span style="text-decoration: underline;">for  this purpose have </span><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>I established the Constitution</strong></span><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> of this land</span>&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>.  	 Reiterating the Constitutions importance, President David O McKay  said, and recently, Elder L Tom Perry reiterated:</strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;</strong><strong>Next  to being one in worshiping God there is nothing in this world upon  which this Church should be more united than in upholding and  defending the Constitution of the United States</strong><strong>&#8221;  (BYU, Sept. 1987)</strong></p>
<p>Unfortunately  sometimes we think this is engaging in politics.  President Joseph F  Smith had something to say in those regards:</p>
<p>“There has been a  tendency among some Latter-day Saints, even when the Constitution is  mentioned, to say, ‘There he goes talking politics.’ I am not  talking politics. I am quoting the words of the Lord.” Joseph F.  Smith CR April 1946</p>
<p>The Constitution is  the word of the Lord, why would we want to skim by, or ignore such a  thing as this?</p>
<p>Why do we need to  be united in “upholding and defending the Constitution”?  Why  does it need defending?  No one would want to attack or weaken it…  would they?</p>
<p>The prophets have  some revealing insight on the matter.  In Gen Conf. President J.  Reuben Clark Jr. of the First Presidency said. <strong>“</strong><span lang="en-US">I  say unto you with all the soberness I can, that we stand in danger of  losing our liberties, and that once lost, only blood will bring them  back; and once lost, we of this Church will, in order to keep the  Church going forward, have more sacrifices to make and more  persecutions to endure than we have yet known, heavy as our  sacrifices and grievous as our persecutions of the past have been.”  -</span>Conference Report, April 1944<span lang="en-US"> </span></p>
<p>President Clark  taught us here that our freedom is under attack. What is the cause of  such a threat to freedom?</p>
<p>President Benson  said,</p>
<p>“Concerning the  United States, the Lord revealed to his prophets that its greatest  threat would be a vast, worldwide &#8220;<strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">secret  combination</span></strong>&#8221; which would not only threaten the  United States but also seek to &#8220;overthrow the freedom of all  lands, nations.”-<strong> </strong><span lang="en-US">Conference  Report, October 1961</span></p>
<p>Expounding on this,  President Benson said:</p>
<p>“Joseph Smith  said that the Book of Mormon was the &#8220;keystone of our religion&#8221;  and the &#8220;most correct&#8221; book on earth. (DHC, vol. 6, p. 56.)  This most correct book on earth states that the downfall of two great  American civilizations came as a result of secret conspiracies whose  desire was to overthrow the freedom of the people.</p>
<p>Now undoubtedly  Moroni could have pointed out many factors that led to the  destruction of the people, but notice how he singled out the secret  combinations, just as the Church today could point out many threats  to peace, prosperity, and the spread of God&#8217;s work, but it has  singled out as the greatest threat the Godless conspiracy. There is  no conspiracy theory in the Book of Mormon—it is a conspiracy fact.   And along this line I would highly recommend to you a new book  entitled, ‘None Dare Call It Conspiracy’.”(Gen. Conf. April,  1972)</p>
<p>The scriptures  describe this latter-day conspiracy that seeks to destroy the  freedoms of all lands, nations and countries <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/ether/8/23-25#23" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Ether 8:23&ndash;25" target="_ether823-25">Ether 8:23&ndash;25</a> teaches us  that this Latter-Day conspiracy seeks to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Get Power (Vs. 23)</li>
<li>Get Gain or Money (Vs. 23)</li>
<li>Murder (vs. 24)</li>
<li>Overthrow Freedom in <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>all</strong></span> Lands, Nations, and Countries (vs. 25)</li>
<li>Bring Destruction to all People  	(vs. 25)</li>
</ul>
<p>As was shown  before, the Lords prophets have admonished us to “do all we can to  preserve freedom”.  Moroni pleads for the same here as well.  He  says that when we “awake to our awful situation,” that we must</p>
<ul>
<li>Repent of Our Sins (vs. 23)</li>
<li>Not Allow This Conspiracy to Get  	Above You (vs. 23)</li>
</ul>
<p>If we do allow it, it will prove our  destruction just as it did the Jaredites and the Nephites.</p>
<p>We are still  involved in this Satan vs. the Lord battle, and Latter-day Saints are  Satan’s biggest obstacle to accomplishing his plan, so we are his  major focus.  Satan tries to trick Latter-day Saints not to “get  involved” in the freedom battle.</p>
<p>In General Conference of April 1965,  then Elder Benson, exposes those tactics of the evil on;</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;</strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">We  really haven&#8217;t received much instruction about freedom,&#8221;</span><strong> the devil says.</strong></p>
<p><strong>This is a lie, for we have  been warned time and again… Last conference I spoke of a book  embodying much of the prophets&#8217; warnings on freedom…which I commend  to you. It is entitled Prophets, Principles, and National Survival.</strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&#8220;You&#8217;re too involved in other church work,&#8221;</span> says the  devil.</p>
<p>But freedom is a weighty matter of the law; the lesser principles of  the gospel you should keep but not leave this one undone. We may have  to balance and manage our time better.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry,&#8221; says the devil &#8220;the Lord will  protect you, and besides the world is so corrupt and heading toward  destruction at such a pace that you can&#8217;t stop it, so why try.&#8221; </span><strong>Well to begin with, the  Lord will not protect us unless we do our part. But many of the  prophecies referring to America&#8217;s preservation are conditional. That  is, if we do our duty we can be preserved, and if not then we shall  be destroyed. This means that a good deal of the responsibility lies  with the priesthood of this Church as to what happens to America and  as to how much tragedy can be avoided if we do act now.</strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&#8220;Don&#8217;t do anything in the fight for freedom until the Church  sets up its own specific program to save the Constitution.&#8221;</span><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>To those slothful servants  who will not do anything until they are &#8220;compelled in all  things.&#8221; Maybe the Lord will never set up a specific church  program for the purpose of saving the Constitution. </strong></p>
<p>The Prophet Joseph Smith declared it will be the elders of Israel who  will step forward to help save the Constitution, not the Church.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">ETB Gen Oct 1966</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Just live the gospel</span><strong>; </strong><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">there&#8217;s  no need to get involved in trying to save freedom and the  Constitution</span></strong><strong> </strong><strong>(says  the devil)….</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Of  course, this is dangerous reasoning, because in reality you cannot  fully live the gospel without working to save freedom and the  Constitution…</strong></p>
<p><span lang="en-US">Now  that we understand there are  no good excuses and we need to be  actively engaged, what are we to do?</span></p>
<p>In General  Conference, October 1987, President Benson, as President of the  Church laid out these steps:</p>
<p>First and  foremost, we must be righteous</p>
<p>Second, we must  learn the principles of the Constitution in the tradition of the  Founding Fathers</p>
<p>Third, we must  become involved in civic affairs to see that we are properly  represented&#8230;</p>
<p>Fourth, we must  make our influence felt by our vote, our letters, our teaching, and  our advice.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span></p>
<p>Then in the  General Conference of October 2003, Elder M Russell Ballard said:<span lang="en-US"> </span></p>
<p>“’The only thing necessary for the  triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’ <span style="text-decoration: underline;">We need to raise  our voices with other concerned citizens</span> throughout the world in  opposition to current trends.</p>
<p>Elder Christensen,  in the February 2006 Ensign, emphasized this as well when he said,</p>
<p>What a sacred privilege and  responsibility is ours to participate with other like-minded people  to ensure that basic freedoms are preserved wherever we reside.</p>
<p>In addition to  certain things we can do on our own, we have a “Responsibility”  to join and work with others to reverse current trends and preserve  freedom.  Elder Christensen recommends working with those of  “like-mind”.  Those groups of like-minded people should  understand the Constitution in the tradition of the Founding Fathers,  and that its biggest threat is a conspiracy that seeks to destroy  every land and country.</p>
<p>In the June 2007  Ensign President Hinckley said,</p>
<p>“That war (the  War in Heaven), so bitter, so intense, has never ceased. It is the  war… between agency and compulsion, between the followers of Christ  and those who have denied Him. His enemies have used every stratagem  in that conflict. They’ve indulged in lying and deceit. They’ve  employed money and wealth. They’ve tricked the minds of men.  They’ve murdered and destroyed and engaged in every kind of evil  practice to thwart the work of Christ.”</p>
<p><strong>Those  enemies of Christ have sought to destroy His work, but those efforts  are in vain. In the end, the Lord wins!  President Benson testified,</strong></p>
<p>The Lord has  declared that before the second coming of Christ it will be necessary  to &#8220;destroy the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">secret</span> works of darkness&#8221; in order  to preserve the land of Zion&#8221; the Americas. (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_ne/10/11-16#11" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 2 Nephi 10:11&ndash;16" target="_2_ne1011-16">2 Nephi 10:11&ndash;16</a>.)  &#8211; General Conference, Sept. 1961</p>
<p><strong>Those  that seek to destroy freedom in America must be defeated. They will  be defeated.  The only question that remains is; which side of the  fence will we be on?</strong> </p>

<p>This book is an overview of the conspiracies that encompass the world today. They slowly move our world in the direction of The New World Order, a one-world government ruled by rich and powerful cliques and organizations. Certain people such as Larry McDonald knew of their existence and paid with their lives. This overall conspiracy consists of many organizations which fall into three main categories or arms: 1) a financial arm, 2) a political arm, and 3) a religious arm.</p>
<p>With the religious arm the conspirators aim to create a one-world religion which will supplant all others. To that end, they have engaged the services of the Anti-Christ.</p>
<p>The conspiracy also employs the news media and education establishments to disguise their actions and words, giving them relative anonymity while they pursue their one-world goals. They are thus able to make changes on the surface called the world while they hide Beneath the Tide.</p>
<p>Control over the media and educational establishments has enabled the conspiracy to ridicule with impunity any who dare to call public attention to their machinations. Such ridicule and defamation has resulted in a public mind set that, today, automatically rejects all attempts to bring the truth to light. So the truth swims against a strong public sentiment of rejection, which was carefully created by the conspiracy many years ago.</p>
<p>Beneath the Tide makes many claims which are backed up by this web site. There are over two hundred source documents listed herein which is enough to convince any open minded person that the charges made in this book are true. <p>I have heard that the sense most closely associated with memory is the sense of smell. If this is true, then perhaps it explains the many pleasing feelings that overtake me these mornings when I am able to step outdoors for a few moments and breathe in the warm and comfortable aromas that I have come to associate over the years with the soil and vegetation of this good earth.</p>
<p>Now and then, when the moment is right, some particular scent—perhaps only the green grass, or the smell of sage brought from a distance by a breeze—will take me back to the days of my youth in Arizona. It was an arid country, yet it was fruitful under the hands of determined laborers.</p>
<p>We worked with the land and the cattle in all kinds of weather, and when we traveled it was on horseback or in open wagons or carriages, mostly. I used to run like the wind with my brothers and sisters through the orchards, down the dusty lanes, past rows of corn, red tomatoes, onions, squash. Because of this, I suppose it is natural to think that in those days we were closer to elemental life.</p>
<p>Some time ago I chanced to walk outdoors when the dark and massive clouds of an early afternoon thunderstorm were gathering; and as the large raindrops began to drum the dusty soil with increasing rapidity, I recalled the occasional summer afternoons when I was a boy when the tremendous thunderheads would gather over the hills and bring welcome rain to the thirsty soil of the valley floor. We children would run for the shed, and while the lightning danced about we would sit and watch, transfixed, marveling at the ever-increasing power of the pounding rainfall. Afterward, the air would be clean and cool and filled with the sweet smells of the soil, the trees, and the plants of the garden.</p>
<p>There were evenings those many years ago, at about sunset, when I would walk in with the cows. Stopping by a tired old fence post, I would sometimes just stand silently in the mellow light and the fragrance of sunflowers and ask myself, &#8220;If you were going to create a world, what would it be like?&#8221; Now with a little thought the answer seems so natural: &#8220;Just like this one.&#8221;</p>
<p>So on this day while I stood watching the thunderstorm, I felt—and I feel now—that this is a marvelous earth on which we find ourselves: and when I thought of our preparations for the United States Bicentennial celebration I felt a deep gratitude to the Lord for the choice land and the people and institutions of America. There is much that is good in this land, and much to love.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, on this occasion of so many pleasant memories another impression assailed my thoughts. The dark and threatening clouds that hung so low over the valley seemed to force my mind back to a theme that the Brethren have concerned themselves with for many years now—indeed a theme that has often occupied the attention of the Lord’s chosen prophets since the world began. I am speaking of the general state of wickedness in which we seem to find the world in these perilous yet crucially momentous days; and thinking of this, I am reminded of the general principle that where much is given, much is expected. (See <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/luke/12/48#48" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Luke 12:48" target="_luke1248">Luke 12:48</a>.)</p>
<p>The Lord gave us a choice world and expects righteousness and obedience to his commandments in return. But when I review the performance of this people in comparison with what is expected, I am appalled and frightened. Iniquity seems to abound. The Destroyer seems to be taking full advantage of the time remaining to him in this, the great day of his power. Evil seems about to engulf us like a great wave, and we feel that truly we are living in conditions similar to those in the days of Noah before the Flood.</p>
<p>I have traveled much in various assignments over the years, and when I pass through the lovely countryside or fly over the vast and beautiful expanses of our globe, I compare these beauties with many of the dark and miserable practices of men, and I have the feeling that the good earth can hardly bear our presence upon it. I recall the occasion when Enoch heard the earth mourn, saying, &#8220;Wo, wo is me, the mother of men; I am pained, I am weary, because of the wickedness of my children. When shall I rest, and be cleansed from the filthiness which is gone forth out of me?&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/7/48#48" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 7:48" target="_moses748">Moses 7:48</a>.)</p>
<p>The Brethren constantly cry out against that which is intolerable in the sight of the Lord: against pollution of mind, body, and our surroundings; against vulgarity, stealing, lying, pride, and blasphemy; against fornication, adultery, homosexuality, and all other abuses of the sacred power to create; against murder and all that is like unto it; against all manner of desecration.</p>
<p>That such a cry should be necessary among a people so blessed is amazing to me. And that such things should be found even among the Saints to some degree is scarcely believable, for these are a people who are in possession of many gifts of the Spirit, who have knowledge that puts the eternities into perspective, who have been shown the way to eternal life.</p>
<p>Sadly, however, we find that to be shown the way is not necessarily to walk in it, and many have not been able to continue in faith. These have submitted themselves in one degree or another to the enticings of Satan and his servants and joined with those of &#8220;the world&#8221; in lives of ever-deepening idolatry.</p>
<p>I use the word idolatry intentionally. As I study ancient scripture, I am more and more convinced that there is significance in the fact that the commandment &#8220;Thou shalt have no other gods before me&#8221; is the first of the Ten Commandments.</p>
<p>Few men have ever knowingly and deliberately chosen to reject God and his blessings. Rather, we learn from the scriptures that because the exercise of faith has always appeared to be more difficult than relying on things more immediately at hand, carnal man has tended to transfer his trust in God to material things. Therefore, in all ages when men have fallen under the power of Satan and lost the faith, they have put in its place a hope in the &#8220;arm of flesh&#8221; and in &#8220;gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dan/5/23#23" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Dan. 5:23" target="_dan523">Dan. 5:23</a>)—that is, in idols. This I find to be a dominant theme in the Old Testament. Whatever thing a man sets his heart and his trust in most is his god; and if his god doesn’t also happen to be the true and living God of Israel, that man is laboring in idolatry.</p>
<p>It is my firm belief that when we read these scriptures and try to &#8220;liken them unto [our]selves,&#8221; as Nephi suggested (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/1_ne/19/24#24" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 1 Ne. 19:24" target="_1_ne1924">1 Ne. 19:24</a>), we will see many parallels between the ancient worship of graven images and behavioral patterns in our very own experience.</p>
<p>The Lord has blessed us as a people with a prosperity unequaled in times past. The resources that have been placed in our power are good, and necessary to our work here on the earth. But I am afraid that many of us have been surfeited with flocks and herds and acres and barns and wealth and have begun to worship them as false gods, and they have power over us. Do we have more of these good things than our faith can stand? Many people spend most of their time working in the service of a self-image that includes sufficient money, stocks, bonds, investment portfolios, property, credit cards, furnishings, automobiles, and the like to guarantee carnal security throughout, it is hoped, a long and happy life. Forgotten is the fact that our assignment is to use these many resources in our families and quorums to build up the kingdom of God—to further the missionary effort and the genealogical and temple work; to raise our children up as fruitful servants unto the Lord; to bless others in every way, that they may also be fruitful. Instead, we expend these blessings on our own desires, and as Moroni said, &#8220;Ye adorn yourselves with that which hath no life, and yet suffer the hungry, and the needy, and the naked, and the sick and the afflicted to pass by you, and notice them not.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/morm/8/39#39" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Morm. 8:39" target="_morm839">Morm. 8:39</a>.)</p>
<p>As the Lord himself said in our day, &#8220;They seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness, but every man walketh in his own way, and after the image of his own God, whose image is in the likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol, which waxeth old and shall perish in Babylon, even Babylon the great, which shall fall.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/1/16#16" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 1:16" target="_dc116">D&amp;C 1:16</a>; italics added.)</p>
<p>One man I know of was called to a position of service in the Church, but he felt that he couldn’t accept because his investments required more attention and more of his time than he could spare for the Lord’s work. He left the service of the Lord in search of Mammon, and he is a millionaire today.</p>
<p>But I recently learned an interesting fact: If a man owns a million dollars worth of gold at today’s prices, he possesses approximately one 27-billionth of all the gold that is present in the earth’s thin crust alone. This is an amount so small in proportion as to be inconceivable to the mind of man. But there is more to this: The Lord who created and has power over all the earth created many other earths as well, even &#8220;worlds without number&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/1/33#33" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 1:33" target="_moses133">Moses 1:33</a>); and when this man received the oath and covenant of the priesthood (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/84/33-44#33" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 84:33&ndash;44" target="_dc8433-44">D&amp;C 84:33&ndash;44</a>), he received a promise from the Lord of &#8220;all that my Father hath&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/84/38#38" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 84:38" target="_dc8438">D&amp;C 84:38</a>). To set aside all these great promises in favor of a chest of gold and a sense of carnal security is a mistake in perspective of colossal proportions. To think that he has settled for so little is a saddening and pitiful prospect indeed; the souls of men are far more precious than this.</p>
<p>One young man, when called on a mission, replied that he didn’t have much talent for that kind of thing. What he was good at was keeping his powerful new automobile in top condition. He enjoyed the sense of power and acceleration, and when he was driving, the continual motion gave him the illusion that he was really getting somewhere.</p>
<p>All along, his father had been content with saying, &#8220;He likes to do things with his hands. That’s good enough for him.&#8221;</p>
<p>Good enough for a son of God? This young man didn’t realize that the power of his automobile is infinitesimally small in comparison with the power of the sea, or of the sun; and there are many suns, all controlled by law and by priesthood, ultimately—a priesthood power that he could have been developing in the service of the Lord. He settled for a pitiful god, a composite of steel and rubber and shiny chrome.</p>
<p>An older couple retired from the world of work and also, in effect, from the Church. They purchased a pickup truck and camper and, separating themselves from all obligations, set out to see the world and simply enjoy what little they had accumulated the rest of their days. They had no time for the temple, were too busy for genealogical research and for missionary service. He lost contact with his high priests quorum and was not home enough to work on his personal history. Their experience and leadership were sorely needed in their branch, but, unable to &#8220;endure to the end,&#8221; they were not available.</p>
<p>I am reminded of an article I read some years ago about a group of men who had gone to the jungles to capture monkeys. They tried a number of different things to catch the monkeys, including nets. But finding that the nets could injure such small creatures, they finally came upon an ingenious solution. They built a large number of small boxes, and in the top of each they bored a hole just large enough for a monkey to get his hand into. They then set these boxes out under the trees and in each one they put a nut that the monkeys were particularly fond of.</p>
<p>When the men left, the monkeys began to come down from the trees and examine the boxes. Finding that there were nuts to be had, they reached into the boxes to get them. But when a monkey would try to withdraw his hand with the nut, he could not get his hand out of the box because his little fist, with the nut inside, was now too large.</p>
<p>At about this time, the men would come out of the underbrush and converge on the monkeys. And here is the curious thing: When the monkeys saw the men coming, they would shriek and scramble about with the thought of escaping; but as easy as it would have been, they would not let go of the nut so that they could withdraw their hands from the boxes and thus escape. The men captured them easily.</p>
<p>And so it often seems to be with people, having such a firm grasp on things of the world—that which is telestial—that no amount of urging and no degree of emergency can persuade them to let go in favor of that which is celestial. Satan gets them in his grip easily. If we insist on spending all our time and resources building up for ourselves a worldly kingdom, that is exactly what we will inherit.</p>
<p>In spite of our delight in defining ourselves as modern, and our tendency to think we possess a sophistication that no people in the past ever had—in spite of these things, we are, on the whole, an idolatrous people—a condition most repugnant to the Lord.</p>
<p>We are a warlike people, easily distracted from our assignment of preparing for the coming of the Lord. When enemies rise up, we commit vast resources to the fabrication of gods of stone and steel—ships, planes, missiles, fortifications—and depend on them for protection and deliverance. When threatened, we become antienemy instead of pro-kingdom of God; we train a man in the art of war and call him a patriot, thus, in the manner of Satan’s counterfeit of true patriotism, perverting the Savior’s teaching:</p>
<p>&#8220;Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;</p>
<p>&#8220;That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/matt/5/44-45#44" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Matt. 5:44&ndash;45" target="_matt544-45">Matt. 5:44&ndash;45</a>.)</p>
<p>We forget that if we are righteous the Lord will either not suffer our enemies to come upon us—and this is the special promise to the inhabitants of the land of the Americas (see <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_ne/1/7#7" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 2 Ne. 1:7" target="_2_ne17">2 Ne. 1:7</a>)—or he will fight our battles for us (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/ex/14/14#14" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Ex. 14:14" target="_ex1414">Ex. 14:14</a>; <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/98/37#37" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 98:37" target="_dc9837">D&amp;C 98:37</a>, to name only two references of many). This he is able to do, for as he said at the time of his betrayal, &#8220;Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/matt/26/53#53" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Matt. 26:53" target="_matt2653">Matt. 26:53</a>.) We can imagine what fearsome soldiers they would be. King Jehoshaphat and his people were delivered by such a troop (see <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_chr/20" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 2 Chr. 20" target="_2_chr20">2 Chr. 20</a>), and when Elisha’s life was threatened, he comforted his servant by saying, &#8220;Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_kgs/6/16#16" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 2 Kgs. 6:16" target="_2_kgs616">2 Kgs. 6:16</a>). The Lord then opened the eyes of the servant, &#8220;And he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_kgs/6/17#17" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 2 Kgs. 6:17" target="_2_kgs617">2 Kgs. 6:17</a>.)</p>
<p>Enoch, too, was a man of great faith who would not be distracted from his duties by the enemy: &#8220;And so great was the faith of Enoch, that he led the people of God, and their enemies came to battle against them; and he spake the word of the Lord, and the earth trembled, and the mountains fled, even according to his command; and the rivers of water were turned out of their course; and the roar of the lions was heard out of the wilderness; and all nations feared greatly, so powerful was the word of Enoch.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moses/7/13#13" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Moses 7:13" target="_moses713">Moses 7:13</a>.)</p>
<p>What are we to fear when the Lord is with us? Can we not take the Lord at his word and exercise a particle of faith in him? Our assignment is affirmative: to forsake the things of the world as ends in themselves; to leave off idolatry and press forward in faith; to carry the gospel to our enemies, that they might no longer be our enemies.</p>
<p>We must leave off the worship of modern-day idols and a reliance on the &#8220;arm of flesh,&#8221; for the Lord has said to all the world in our day, &#8220;I will not spare any that remain in Babylon.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/64/24#24" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 64:24" target="_dc6424">D&amp;C 64:24</a>.)</p>
<p>When Peter preached such a message as this to the people on the day of Pentecost, many of them &#8220;were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/acts/2/37#37" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Acts 2:37" target="_acts237">Acts 2:37</a>.)</p>
<p>And Peter answered: &#8220;Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and … receive the Holy Ghost.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/acts/2/38#38" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Acts 2:38" target="_acts238">Acts 2:38</a>.)</p>
<p>As we near the year 2,000, our message is the same as that which Peter gave. And further, that which the Lord himself gave &#8220;unto the ends of the earth, that all that will hear may hear:</p>
<p>&#8220;Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh.&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/1/11-12#11" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 1:11&ndash;12" target="_dc111-12">D&amp;C 1:11&ndash;12</a>.)</p>
<p>We believe that the way for each person and each family to prepare as the Lord has directed is to begin to exercise greater faith, to repent, and to enter into the work of his kingdom on earth, which is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It may seem a little difficult at first, but when a person begins to catch a vision of the true work, when he begins to see something of eternity in its true perspective, the blessings begin to far outweigh the cost of leaving &#8220;the world&#8221; behind.</p>
<p>Herein lies the only true happiness, and therefore we invite and welcome all men, everywhere, to join in this work. For those who are determined to serve the Lord at all costs, this is the way to eternal life. All else is but a means to that end. </p>

<h2>What is Freedom?</h2>
<p>&#8220;A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the region of ignorance that tyranny begins.&#8221; Benjamin Franklin</p>
<p>&#8220;Free agency means that a man may serve either God or the devil, without external compulsion. How can a man be compelled to serve the one or the other? It must, in the nature of the case, be a matter for free choice. He has his free agency to commit all sorts of crime, even to murder. But he will very soon learn that he has no legal right to do so. The idea of non-interference with the lives, the property, and the peace of others are commonly taken as a basic principle in determining legal rights.&#8221;<br />

<p>&#8220;…the Latter-day Saint belief in man’s uncreated individuality and in the sanctity of his agency—an agency so sacrosanct that God himself will not infringe upon it—denies the legitimacy of force as a means of attaining the community’s ends. Man’s goal is seen as being the perfection of his individuality in the image of his Heavenly Father, until he is able to enjoy a celestial community. <p>&#8220;My independence is sacred to me—it is a portion of that same Deity that rules in the heavens. <p>&#8220;Lucifer&#8217;s plan would, according to his reasoning, remove the possibility of any child of God committing sin. Man should not be given the opportunity to sin; therefore either he should not be given any commandments, (thus could not sin,) or if he is given commandments he should not be given the right of choice as to whether or not he will keep the commandments but should be forced to keep them&#8221;(Joseph F. <p><a id="rights" name="rights">&#8220;Rights are either God-given as part of the divine plan, or they are granted by government as part of the political plan. If we accept the premise that human rights are granted by government, then we must be willing to accept the corollary that they can be denied by government. <p>&#8220;The freedom and independence afforded by the Constitution and Bill of Rights are divine rights &#8211; sacred, essential, and inalienable.&#8221; (M. Russell Ballard, Religion in a Free Society, Ensign October 1992)</p>
<p>&#8220;Today, brethren, we are in danger of actually surrendering our personal and property rights. This development, if it does occur in full form, will be a sad tragedy for our people. We must recognize that property rights are essential to human liberty.</p>
<p>Former United States Supreme Court Justice George Sutherland, from our own State [Utah], carefully stated it as follows: &#8220;It is not the right of property which is protected, but the right to property. Property, per se has no rights; but the individual &#8211;the man&#8211;has three great rights, equally sacred from arbitrary interference: the right to</p>
<p>his life, the right to his liberty, and the right to his property. The three rights are so bound together as to be essentially one right. To give a man his life, but deny him his liberty, is to take from him all that makes life worth living. To give him liberty, but take from him</p>

<p>&#8220;We see abroad in the world an increase in these coercive systems. We witness millions of God&#8217;s children in bondage, who have had their blessings of liberty and freedom taken from them. Great numbers of liberty-loving people no longer have their free agency, no longer have freedom of choice such as we enjoy here. They no longer have the privilege of living where they wish, taking advantage of any educational or work opportunity, but on the contrary they are under the power of these coercive systems and have lost completely their God-given free agency.&#8221;(Elder Ezra Taft Benson, Conference Report, April 1948, Second Day-Morning Meeting 85.)</p>
<p>&#8220;The central issue in that pre-mortal council was: Shall the children of God have untrammeled agency to choose the course they should follow, whether good or evil, or shall they be coerced and forced to be obedient? Christ and all who followed Him stood for the former proposition—freedom of choice; Satan stood for the latter—coercion and force. The war that began in heaven over this issue is not yet over. The conflict continues on the battlefield of mortality. <p>&#8220;Yes, we all love the gospel&#8211;or should do. We should all strive to live according to its precepts. But the basic thread running through the gospel plan is the freedom, the right of choice, of the individual. The gospel can prosper only where there is freedom.&#8221;(Ezra Taft Benson, Conf., Oct. 1966)</p>
<p><a id="sovereignty" name="sovereignty">&#8220;Perhaps the most important of the great fundamentals of the inspired Constitution is the principle of popular sovereignty: The people are the source of government power. Along with many religious people, Latter-day saints affirm that God gave the power to people, and the people consented to a constitution that delegated certain powers to the government. Sovereignty is not inherent in a state or nation just because it has the power that comes from the force of arms. Sovereignty does not come from the divine right of a king, who grants his subjects such power as he pleases or is forced to concede…The sovereign power is in the people.&#8221; (Dallin H. <h2>Socialism/Forced Charity (i.e. Social Programs) and Forced Morality</h2>
<p>&#8220;No true Latter-day Saint or true American can be a socialist or support programs leading in that direction. These evil philosophies are incompatible with Americanism, with Mormonism, and with the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;In reply to the argument that a little bit of socialism is good so long as it doesn&#8217;t go too far, it is tempting to say that, in like fashion, just a little bit of theft or a little bit of cancer is all right, too! History proves that the growth of the welfare state is difficult to check before it comes to its full flower of dictatorship. But let us hope that this time around, the trend can be reversed. If not then we will see the inevitability of complete socialism, probably within our lifetime.&#8221;(The Proper Role of Government, Ezra T. Benson)</p>
<p>&#8220;As important as are all other principles of the gospel, it was the freedom issue that determined whether you received a body. To have been on the wrong side of the freedom issue during the War in Heaven meant eternal damnation. How then can Latter-day Saints expect to be on the wrong side in this life and escape the eternal consequences? The War in Heaven is raging on earth today. The issues are the same: Shall men be compelled to do what others claim is for their best welfare or will they heed the counsel of the prophets and their freedom?</p>
<p>We believe that the gospel is the greatest thing in the world; why then do we not force people to join the Church if they are not smart enough to see it on their own? Because this is Satan’s way, the Lord uses persuasion and love.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;Peace will come and be maintained only through the triumph of the principles of peace, and by the consequent subjection of the enemies of peace, which are hatred, envy, ill-gotten gain, the exercise of unrighteous dominion of men. Yielding to these evils brings misery to the individual, unhappiness to the home, war among nations.&#8221;(<em>Gospel Ideals,</em> Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1953, p. 280. President David O. <p>&#8220;What about the lame, the sick and the destitute?&#8221; Is an often-voiced question. Most other countries in the world have attempted to use the power of government to meet this need. Yet, in every case, the improvement has been marginal at best and has resulted in the long run creating more misery, more poverty, and certainly less freedom than when government first stepped in.</p>
<p>Most of the major ills of the world have been caused by well-meaning people who ignored the principle of individual freedom, except as applied to themselves, and were obsessed with fanatical zeal to improve the lot of man kind-in-the-mass through some pet formula of their own… The harm dome by ordinary criminals, murderers, gangsters, and thieves is negligible in comparison with the agony inflicted upon human beings by the professional ‘do-gooder,’ who attempt to set themselves up as gods on earth and who would ruthlessly force their views on all others—with the abiding assurance that the end justifies the means.&#8221;(The Proper Role of Government, Ezra T. <p>&#8221; It has been fundamental to our way of life that charity must be voluntary if it is to be charity. Compulsory benevolence is not charity. Today’s egalitarian are using the federal government to redistribute wealth in our society, not as a matter of voluntary charity, but as a matter of right.&#8221;(This nation shall Endure p.91 Ezra T. Benson)</p>
<p>&#8220;For behold, if a man being evils giveth a gift, he doeth it grudgingly; wherefore it is counted unto him the same as if he had retained the gift; wherefore he is counted evil before God.&#8221;(Moro.7:8)</p>
<p>&#8220;…profit motive DIMINISHES as government controls, regulations and taxes INCREASE to deny the fruits of success to those who produce. Therefore, any attempt THROUGH GOVERNMENTAL INTERVENTION to redistribute the material rewards of labor can only result in the eventual destruction of the productive base of society, without which real abundance and security for more than the ruling elite is quite impossible.</p>
<p>England was killed by an idea: the idea that the weak, indolent and profligate must be supported by the strong, industrious, and frugal &#8211; to the degree that tax-consumers will have a living standard comparable to that of taxpayers; the idea that government exists for the purpose of plundering those who work to give the product of their labor to those who do not work. The economic and social cannibalism produced by this communist-socialist idea will destroy any society which adopts it and clings to it as a basic principle.</p>
<p>No one has the authority to grant such powers, as welfare programs, schemes for re-distributing the wealth, and activities which coerce people into acting in accordance with a prescribed code of social planning. There is one simple test. Do I as an individual have a right to use force upon my neighbor to accomplish this goal? If I do have such a right, then I may delegate that power to my government to exercise on my behalf. If I do not have that right as an individual, then I cannot delegate it to government, and I cannot ask my government to perform the act for me.&#8221;(The Proper Role of Government, Ezra T. <p>&#8220;Assume, for example, that we were farmers, and that we received a letter from the government telling us that we were going to get a thousand dollars this year for plowed up acreage. But rather than the normal method of collection, we were to take this letter and collect $69.71 from Bill Brown, at such and such an address, and $82.47 from Henry Jones, $59.80 from a Bill Smith, and so on down the line; that these men would make up our farm subsidy. &#8220;Neither you nor I, nor would 99 percent of the farmers, walk up and ring a man&#8217;s doorbell, hold out a hand and say, &#8216;Give me what you&#8217;ve earned even though I have not.&#8217; We simply wouldn&#8217;t do it because we would be facing directly the violation of a moral/(<em>criminal</em>) law, &#8216;Thou shalt not steal.&#8217; In short, we would be held accountable for our actions.&#8221;(Proper Role of Government, Ezra T. <p><a id="taxation" name="taxation">&#8220;The difficulty with all governments, and one to which our own has fallen heir, is that the majority, by virtue of its right to place limitations on man&#8217;s free agency, has undertaken to infringe upon the rights reserved to the individual, for the direct and immediate benefit of law and order. For example: the Constitution expressly prohibits taking of personal property for public purposes without just compensation. Under the guise of taxation, the Constitution is violated and property is taken from one and given to another.&#8221;(Henry D. Moyle, an Apostle, Relief Society Magazine, 1957.)</a></p>
<p>&#8220;Yea, and thus they were supported in their laziness, and in their idolatry, and in their whoredoms, by the taxes which king Noah had put upon his people; thus did the people labor exceedingly to support iniquity&#8221;(<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/mosiah/11/6#6" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Mosiah 11:6" target="_mosiah116">Mosiah 11:6</a>)</p>
<p>&#8220;For behold, we are in bondage to the Lamanites, and are taxed with a tax which is grievous to be borne. <p>&#8220;Is the united order a communal system? Emphatically not. It never has been and never will be. It is &#8220;intensely individualistic.&#8221; Does the united order eliminate private ownership of property? No. &#8220;The fundamental principle of this system is the private ownership of property.&#8221;(Teaching of Ezra T. Benson p.122, quoting J. Reuben Clark 1977 BYU speech)</p>
<p>&#8220;…the best way to achieve progress in our country is through individual efforts and not government force, which in the end will destroy all progress and all freedom…the moment government steps in and dictates… the individual’s rights begin to diminish and are in danger ultimately of vanishing.&#8221;(Ezra T. <h2>The proper role of government</h2>
<p>&#8220;We believe that no government can exist in <a href="../../dc/134/2a?phpMyAdmin=6c4a571819t596532e3#2a">peace</a>, except such laws are framed and held inviolate as will secure to each individual the <a href="../../dc/134/2b?phpMyAdmin=6c4a571819t596532e3#2b">free</a> exercise of <a href="../../dc/134/2c?phpMyAdmin=6c4a571819t596532e3#2c">conscience</a>, the right and control of property, and the <a href="../../dc/134/2d?phpMyAdmin=6c4a571819t596532e3#2d">protection</a><sup> </sup>of life.&#8221;(<a href="../../dc/134/2?phpMyAdmin=6c4a571819t596532e3#2">D&amp;C 134: 2</a>)</p>
<p>&#8220;The sole function of government is to protect life, liberty, and property and anything more than this is usurpation and oppression.&#8221;(Ezra Taft Benson, An Enemy Hath Done This, 1969)</p>
<p>&#8220;And that <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/dc/98/5a#5a">law</a> of the land which is <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/dc/98/5b#5b">constitutional</a>, supporting that principle of freedom in maintaining rights and privileges, belongs to all mankind, and is justifiable before me.<br />
Therefore, I, the Lord, justify you, and your brethren of my church, in befriending that law which is the <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/dc/98/6a#6a">constitutional</a> law of the land;<br />
And as pertaining to law of man, whatsoever is more or less than this, cometh of evil.</p>
<p>I, the Lord God, make you <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/dc/98/8a#8a">free</a>, therefore ye are free indeed; and the law also maketh you free.<br />
Nevertheless, when the <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/dc/98/9a#9a">wicked</a> <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/dc/98/9b#9b">rule</a> the people mourn.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;It is impossible that there can be any other legitimate rule, government, power or authority under the face of the heavens, except that which is the kingdom of God&#8221;(John Taylor, journal of Discourses book 1 pg.225)</p>
<p>&#8220;The kingdom of God is an order of government established by divine authority. It is the only legal government that can exist in any part of the universe. <p>&#8220;God, having made all beings and worlds, has the only supreme right to govern them by His own laws. <p>&#8220;[T]he Lord in his wisdom saw the necessity of giving us a nation in which we could thrive. In no other nation under heaven could the Church have been organized and gone forward as we have in this nation. The founding of the United States was not an accident. The giving to us of the Constitution of the United States was not an accident. Our Heavenly Father knew what would be needed, and so he paved the way to give us the Constitution. It came under the influence of prayer, and he guided those who framed that wonderful document.</p>
<p>I hope that the membership of this Church will not be deceived into thinking that other plans, other forms of government, other systems of direction whatsoever, are desirable. I want to say to you without any hesitation that <strong>no form of government in the world</strong> can be compared favorably with the government God gave to us. <p>&#8220;Next to being one in worshiping God, there is nothing in this world upon which this Church should be more united than in upholding and defending the Constitution of the United States.&#8221;(President McKay, The Instructor, Feb. 1956, p. 34.)</p>
<p>&#8220;[T]he Constitution of the United States is a glorious standard; it is founded in the wisdom of God. It is a heavenly banner; it is to all those who are privileged with the sweets of liberty, like the cooling shades and refreshing waters of a great rock in a thirsty and weary land. <p>&#8220;If we would make the world better, let us foster a keener appreciation of the freedom and Liberty guaranteed by the constitution of the United States. Here and again self-proclaimed progressives cry that such old time adherence is out of date, but there are some fundamental principals of a Republic which, like eternal truths, never get out of date and which are applicable at all times to liberty-loving people. Such are the underlying principals of the Constitution, a document framed by patriotic, freedom-loving men who latter-day saints declare were inspired by the Lord.&#8221;(David O. <p>&#8220;The Church unequivocally declares, nothing doubting, that God Himself set up the Constitution of the United States, and that He so declared, saying: &#8220;I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose,&#8221; and the Constitution shall &#8220;be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles.&#8221;(<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/101/80%2C77#80" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 101:80,77" target="_dc10180%2C77">D&amp;C 101:80,77</a>/ J. <p>I consider it a violation of the Constitution for the Federal Government to levy taxes for the support of state or local government; that no State or local government can accept funds from the Federal and remain independent in performing its functions, nor can the citizens exercise their rights of self-government under such conditions.</p>
<p>I deem it a violation of the right of private property guaranteed under the Constitution for the Federal Government to forcibly deprive the citizens of this nation of their property through taxation or otherwise, and make a gift thereof to foreign governments or their citizens.</p>
<p>I am unalterable opposed to Socialism, either in whole or in part, and regard it as an unconstitutional usurpation of power and a denial of the right of private property for government to own or operate the means of producing and distributing goods and services in competition with private enterprise, or to regiment owners in the legitimate use of private property.</p>

<p>&#8220;In the ancient American civilization there was no word which struck greater terror to the hearts of the people than the name of the Gadiantons. It was a secret political party which operated as a murder cult. Its object was to infiltrate legitimate government, plant its officers in high places, and then seize power and live off the spoils appropriated from the people. (It would start out as a small group of &#8220;dissenters&#8221; and by using secret oaths with the threat of death for defectors it would gradually gain a choke hold on the political and economic life of whole civilizations.)</p>

<p>One of the most urgent, heart-stirring appeals made by Moroni as he closed the Book of Mormon was addressed to the gentile nations of the last days. This becomes particularly important when it is realized that communism/socialism is turning out to be the earthly image of the plan which Satan presented in the pre-existence. <p>&#8220;But what about the American nation? That war that destroyed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, (the second war of independence) was nothing, compared to that which will eventually devastate the country… What then will be the condition of that people, when this great and terrible war shall come? It will be very different from the war between the north and south. Do you wish me to describe it? I will do so. It will be a war of neighborhood against neighborhood, city against city, town against town, country against country, state against state, and they will go forth, destroying and being destroyed and manufacturing will in a great measure cease for a time among the American nation. Why?? Because in these terrible wars, they will not be privileged to manufacture, there will be to much bloodshed, too much MOBOCRACY, too much going forth in bands and destroying and pillaging the land to suffer people to pursue any local vocation with any degree of safety.&#8221;(Elder Orson Pratt journal of discourse 20:151 pg.50-51)</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no need to get involved in the fight for freedom-all you need to do is live the gospel. Of course this is a contradiction, because we cannot fully live the gospel and not be involved in the fight for freedom. We would not say to someone, ‘There is no need to be baptized-all you need to do is live the gospel.’ That would be ridiculous because baptism is part of the gospel. How would you have reacted if during the War in Heaven someone had said to you, ‘look, just do what is right; there is no need to get involved in the fight for free agency.&#8221; It is obvious what the devil is trying to do, but it is sad to see many of us fall for his destructive line. The cause of freedom is a most basic part of our religion. Our position on freedom helped get us to the earth and it can make the difference as to whether we get back home or not.&#8221;(Ezra T. <p>&#8220;The devil knows that if the elders of Israel should ever wake up, they could step forth and help preserve freedom and extend the gospel. Therefore the devil has concentrated, and to a large extent successfully, on neutralizing much of the priesthood. He has reduced them to sleeping giants. His arguments are clever. Here are a few samples.</p>
<p>&#8220;<strong>We really haven&#8217;t received much instruction about freedom,&#8221;</strong> the devil says. This is a lie, for we have been warned time and again. No prophet of the Lord has ever issued more solemn warning than President David O. McKay.</p>
<p>&#8220;<strong>You want to be loved by everyone,&#8221; says the devil, &#8220;and this freedom battle is so controversial you might be accused of engaging in politics.&#8221;</strong> Of course, the government has penetrated so much of our lives that one can hardly speak for freedom without being accused of being political. Some might even call the War in Heaven a political struggle&#8211;certainly it was controversial. Yet the valiant entered it with Michael (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/rev/12/7#7" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Revelation 12:7" target="_rev127">Revelation 12:7</a>). Those who support only the popular principles of the gospel have their reward. And those who want to lead the quiet, retiring life but still expect to do their full duty can&#8217;t have it both ways.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Wait until it becomes popular to do,&#8221; says the devil, &#8220;or, at least, until everybody in the Church agrees on what should be done.&#8221;</strong> This fight for freedom might never become popular in our day. And if you wait until everybody agrees in this Church, you will be waiting through the second coming of the Lord. Would you have hesitated to follow the inspired counsel of the Prophet Joseph Smith simply because some weak men disagreed with him? God&#8217;s living mouthpiece has spoken to us&#8211;are we for him or against him? Where do you stand?</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;It might hurt your business or your family,&#8221;</strong> says the devil, <strong>&#8220;and besides, why not let the Gentiles save the country? They aren&#8217;t as busy as you are.&#8221;</strong> Well, there were many businessmen who went along with Hitler because it supposedly helped their business. They lost everything. Many of us are here today because our forefathers loved truth enough that they fought at Valley Forge or crossed the plains in spite of the price it cost them or their families. We had better take our small pain now than our greater loss later. There were souls who wished afterwards that they had stood and fought with Washington and the Founding Fathers, but they waited too long&#8211;they passed up eternal glory. There has never been a greater time than now to stand up against entrenched evil. And while the Gentiles established the Constitution, we have a divine mandate to preserve it. But, unfortunately, today in this freedom struggle many Gentiles are showing greater wisdom in their generation than the children of light (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/luke/16/8#8" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Luke 16:8" target="_luke168">Luke 16:8</a>).</p>
<p>&#8220;<strong>Don&#8217;t worry,&#8221; says the devil; &#8220;the Lord will protect you, and besides, the world is so corrupt and heading toward destruction at such a pace that you can&#8217;t stop it, so why try?&#8221;</strong> Well, to begin with, the Lord will not protect us unless we do our part. This devilish tactic of persuading people not to get concerned because the Lord will protect them no matter what they do is exposed by the Book of Mormon. Referring to the devil, it says: &#8220;And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well&#8211;and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_ne/28/21#21" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: 2 Nephi 28:21" target="_2_ne2821">2 Nephi 28:21</a>).</p>
<p>I like that word carefully. In other words, don&#8217;t shake them&#8212;you might wake them. The Book of Mormon warns us that when we see these murderous conspiracies in our midst, we should awaken to our awful situation (see <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/ether/8/24#24" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Ether 8:24" target="_ether824">Ether 8:24</a>). Now, why should we awaken if the Lord is going to take care of us anyway? Let us suppose that it is too late to save freedom. It is still accounted unto us for righteousness&#8217; sake to stand up and fight. Some Book of Mormon prophets knew of the final desolate end of their nations, but they still fought on, and they saved some souls, including their own, by so doing. For, after all, the purpose of life is to prove ourselves, and the final victory will be for freedom.(<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/abr/3/24-25#24" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Abraham 3:24&ndash;25" target="_abr324-25">Abraham 3:24&ndash;25</a>)</p>
<p>The last neutralizer that the devil uses most effectively is simply this: <strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t do anything in the fight for freedom until the Church sets up its own specific program to save the Constitution.&#8221;</strong> This brings us right back to the scripture about the slothful servants who will not do anything until they are &#8220;compelled in all things&#8221; (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/58/26#26" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 58:26" target="_dc5826">D&amp;C 58:26</a>). Maybe the Lord will never set up a specific Church program for the purpose of saving the Constitution. Perhaps if He set one up at this time it might split the Church asunder, and perhaps He does not want that to happen yet, for not all the wheat and tares are fully ripe (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/86/5-7#5" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: D&amp;C 86:5&ndash;7" target="_dc865-7">D&amp;C 86:5&ndash;7</a> CR April 1965, Improvement Era 68 [June 1965]: 537-39.</p>
<p>Ezra Taft Benson Teachings of Ezra T. Benson Chapter 5 Pg 659 – 661)</p>
<p>&#8220;Joseph Smith said that the Book of Mormon was the &#8216;keystone of our religion&#8217; and the &#8216;most correct&#8217; book on Earth&#8221;. This most correct book on Earth states that the downfall of two great American civilizations came as a result of secret conspiracies whose desire was to overthrow the freedom of the people. &#8216;And they have caused the destruction of this people of whom I am now speaking&#8217;, says Moroni, &#8216;and also the destructions of the people of Nephi (<a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/ether/8/21#21" title="LDS Scriptures Internet Edition: Ether 8:21" target="_ether821">Ether 8:21</a>).&#8217; Now undoubtedly Moroni could have pointed out many factors that led to the destruction of the people, but notice how he singled out the secret combinations, just as the Church today could point out many threats to peace, prosperity, and the spread of God&#8217;s work, but it has singled out the greatest threat as the godless conspiracy. There is no conspiracy theory in the Book of Mormon&#8211;it is a conspiracy fact. Then Moroni speaks to us in this day and says, &#8216;wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you . . .&#8221;(Ezra Taft Benson, CR, April 1972, Ensign, pg. 49-53)</p>
<p>&#8220;The need for such a Church position has never been greater. I realize that it is sometimes unpopular to speak the solemn warning truth. As a people, we do not like to be disturbed from our comfortable complacency. But today we are face to face with an increasingly successful, ruthless conspiracy. <p>&#8220;So one constitutional right after another yielded without any real contest, our backs getting nearer to the wall with each retreat. It is now proposed we retreat still further. Is not this suicide? Is there anyone so naive as to think that things will right themselves without a fight? There has been no more fight in us than there is in a bunch of sheep, and we have been much like sheep. Freedom was never brought to a people on a silver platter, nor maintained with whisk brooms and lavender sprays&#8230;. <h2>Internationalism</h2>
<p><a id="global" name="global"></a>&#8220;There is one and only one legitimate goal of United States foreign policy. It is a narrow goal, a nationalistic goal: the preservation of our national independence. Nothing in the Constitution grants that the president shall have the privilege of offering himself as a world leader. He is our executive; he is on our payroll; he is supposed to put our best interests in front of those of other nations. Nothing in the Constitution nor in logic grants to the president of the United States or to Congress the power to influence the political life of other countries, to ‘uplift&#8217; their cultures, to bolster their economies, to feed their people, or even to defend them against their enemies.&#8221;(The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 614; see also p. 682 &amp; 704)</p>

<h2>Would God favor separation and Independence?</h2>

False thinking and false ideologies, dressed in the most pleasing forms, quietly—almost without our knowing it—seek to reduce our moral defenses and to captivate our minds. They entice with bright promises of security, cradle-to-grave guarantees of many kinds. They masquerade under various names, but all may be recognized by one thing—one thing they all have in common: to erode away character and man’s freedom to think and act for himself. Effort will be made to lull us away into a false security. Proposals will be and are being offered and programs sponsored that have wide appeal. Attractive labels are usually attached to the most dangerous programs, often in the name of public welfare and personal security. <p>&#8220;…If one man stood alone in this position, and millions of men were to say it is not so, that lone man would still be right. We have that right, God has given it to us under the Constitution of the land in which we dwell, and if men enact laws and pile one law upon another until they reach the sky, it would not change this. <p>There are some who feel that the fight for      freedom is separate from the gospel. <p>Americans have always been committed to taking care of the poor, aged, and unemployed. We’ve done this on the basis of Judaic-Christian beliefs and humanitarian principles. It has been fundamental to our way of life that charity must be voluntary if it is to be charity. <strong>Compulsory        benevolence is not charity.</strong> Today’s egalitarians are using the federal government to redistribute wealth in our society, not as a matter of voluntary charity, but as a matter of right. <p>The tenth plank in Karl Marx’s Manifesto      &#8230;advocated the establishment of <strong>“free education for all children in        public schools.”</strong> There were several reasons why Marx wanted government      to run the schools. Dr. A. A. Hodge pointed out one of them&#8230;“if every      party in the State has the right of excluding from public schools whatever      he does not believe to be true, then he that believes most must give way to      him&#8230;that believes absolutely nothing, no matter in how small a minority      the atheists&#8230;may be.” It is self‑evident that &#8230;if&#8230;persistently carried      out&#8230;<strong>[our] system of national popular education will be the most        efficient&#8230;instrument for the propagation of atheism which the world has        ever seen.</strong> (Ezra Taft Benson, General Conference,      October 1970)</p>
<p>Today, we find government engaged in      activities which are <strong>not</strong> within the authorized and proper role of      government. These activities pose a <strong>grave danger to        our continued freedom.</strong> No one has authority to grant      such powers as welfare programs, schemes for re-distributing the wealth, and      activities which coerce people into acting in accordance with a <strong> prescribed code of social planning.</strong> We shouldn’t      forget the wise words of President Grover Cleveland that, “&#8230;though the      people support the Government, <strong>the Government should not support the        people.”</strong></p>

For      nearly 100 years afterwards, the citizens of the             United States          were profoundly suspicious of      corporate power. Corporate charters were created by      individual states as a legal convenience, and <strong>were dissolved if they        violated those charters.
